Health and
Safety Policy
Policy Statement
At Simply Drama, we are committed to providing a safe, healthy, and creative environment for all students, staff, and visitors. Health and safety are integral to every aspect of our drama activities — from rehearsals and performances to backstage operations and special effects. It is our responsibility to ensure that everyone can explore and perform confidently, knowing that risks are managed effectively and safety standards are upheld at all times.
Risk Assessment and Safety Coordination
We conduct thorough risk assessments to identify potential hazards in all Simply Drama spaces, including studios, rehearsal rooms, and theatres. A competent member of staff carries out regular inspections, assessing staging, floor surfaces, available space, portable appliances, technical equipment, lighting, props, storage, and accessibility. A Drama Safety Co-ordinator oversees risk management. All safety procedures are documented, reviewed, and communicated regularly.
Code of Conduct
All staff and students must read and follow the Simply Drama Code of Conduct before taking part in any activity. It is displayed in all drama areas and reinforced regularly. Everyone must wear suitable clothing and footwear, respect safety rules, and report hazards immediately. At the end of each rehearsal, equipment must be left safe, props stored properly, and electrical equipment switched off.
Backstage Safety
Backstage areas must remain clear of obstructions. Items are returned to the props table or storage area after use. Costumes and make-up are stored safely. Access is restricted to authorised personnel only.
Electrical Safety
Only qualified or experienced personnel may handle electrical or mechanical equipment. Regular inspections and visual checks are required. Fixed installations are tested periodically. Cables are kept tidy and routed safely. No work is carried out on live equipment.
Stage Lighting
Stage lighting equipment is inspected regularly. Electrical work is only carried out by a qualified electrician. Lighting fixtures may only be adjusted by a competent person.
Fire Safety
All staff, participants, and audience members are aware of evacuation procedures. Exits are clearly marked and emergency lighting functional. Curtains must be flame-resistant. Fire risk assessments are reviewed before rehearsals and performances.
Special Effects
Before using any special effects such as smoke machines, lasers, or pyrotechnics, a full risk assessment is completed. A trained supervisor oversees their use. Equipment is from reputable suppliers and used as instructed. Performers are briefed and insurance is maintained. Strobe frequency does not exceed five flashes per second.
Medical Information
Medical and allergy information is maintained for all participants. Emergency procedures consider those sensitive to make-up, paint, smoke, dry ice, lasers, or strobe lighting.
Stage Platforms and Machinery
Stage platforms and rostra are securely fastened before each use. Scenery and props are checked between every rehearsal and performance for stability.
Working at Height
Work at height is risk assessed and only performed by responsible, competent individuals using safe equipment and exclusion zones.
Reporting and Review
All incidents or near misses must be reported immediately to the Drama Safety Co-ordinator. We review safety arrangements annually or sooner if required.
